Massanutten District History

The Massanutten District was formed in 1930; just 4 years after the Stonewall Jackson Council received its charter. Rockingham County and Pendleton County in West Virginia, along with the towns therein, were added to the council as the Massanutten District

At one time, the Massanutten District also included Greene, Madison and Orange counties, east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In those early days, the district committee members alternated the meeting on either side of the Blue Ridge. Those men sure put a lot of miles on their cars back then. Those three counties are now part of the Monticello district.

In the late 1970's, Massanutten District was renamed to Northern District. Ok, all you patch collectors, start looking for those rare patches! This new name lasted only a few years, until the district committee members requested the name, Massanutten District, to be used again.

Massanutten District was home to the first Camp Shenandoah, located at Island Ford near McGaheysville. The camp was established in 1930 and was used from 1930 until 1949, when the current site was opened 15 miles west of Staunton.

Massanutten District has always been a vital part of the council and you can be proud to be part of our district.
